Charles County, MD. The La Plata United Methodist Church is pleased to announce the dedication of Peace Poles, an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. Three Peace Poles will be dedicated on June 5 by the Confirmation class. Each Peace Pole bears the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in different languages on each of its four sides.
“In today’s environment, we are thrilled to be able to plant these poles –a first for Charles County and the first one in America to have words from the Bayono people,” said Rev. Dr. Susan E. Boehl, Senior Pastor. The Bayono people are from Papua, Indonesia, and until recently did not have a written language. The La Plata United Methodist Church has supported missionaries for the past several years in this effort. “With all of the division in our country and community, plus the war in Ukraine, the Confirmation class thought the idea of a Peace Pole was appropriate”.
There are an estimated 250,000 Peace Poles covering every country in the world dedicated as monuments to peace. The nearest Peace Poles in Maryland are currently in Annapolis, Gaithersburg, Elkridge, Towson and Lusby.
Members of the media are invited to attend our ceremony, a first-of-a kind in Charles County dedicating peace throughout the world. Rev. Boehl and students of the Confirmation class will be available for interviews and talk about this worthwhile project.
